GoldMine employs a unique method to store email attachments by placing them on the disk rather than within the SQL database where the actual email resides. Essentially, the body of the email contains a reference – a path and filename – pointing to the real file positioned on the disk.

In versions of GoldMine preceding 2023.4, any modifications such as moving or renaming the file on the disk could result in the attachment disappearing from the email viewed in GoldMine. There would be no trace indicating the previous existence of any attachment.

However, if you were aware of an attachment’s existence, you could locate it by viewing the email through your browser, which would display the path and filename of the attachment. But without prior knowledge of the attachment, you wouldn’t know to search for it.

With the introduction of GoldMine version 2023.4, things have changed. Even if the file doesn’t exist in its original location, GoldMine will still display the attachment. This is undoubtedly a helpful feature, but it can also lead to confusion. Seeing an attachment listed that doesn’t actually exist in the specified location can be misleading. Be aware that if you attempt to open this “missing” attachment, you will encounter an error.
